Digging A Hole

The BasketCases had another commitment tonight that prevented us from seeing the first half of the Mystics' game against the Sun up at Mohegan. We got home just as the second quarter was ending, and from the box score, it appeared that every Mystic not named Crystal Langhorne must've had another commitment as well. At the break, Lang had 14 points, while the four other starters combined for all of 10. Not surprisingly, the Mystics were down by 12 at the break.

Sometime late in the third quarter, a few other players showed up for the game, notably Mo and Marissa, but 15 minutes or so of desperation play were insufficient for the Mystics to climb out of the hole they'd dug for themselves. They closed to 3 points with about a minute left, but Connecticut still won, 88-78.

Speaking of digging themselves a hole, the Mystics are now 1-4 since the mid-season break, not a good trend at all, and one that definitely concerns us. Moreover, not only did the Sun gain ground on the Mystics this evening, but with every team in the league playing today, so did all but one of Washington's other Eastern Conference rivals, as Indy, Atlanta and New York also won their games.

The Mystics need to right the ship . . . and they need do it ASAP. Otherwise, in the tightly-packed Eastern Conference, they could find themselves falling out of playoff position before they know what hit them. Next chance to stop the hemmorhaging will come on Thursday against San Antonio, at home in the Phone Booth at 7 PM.

Go Mystics . . . Beat the Silver Stars!

They almost did it. They gave the Sun f ans a real scare. But that is not sufficient. Maybe I should not go to Mohegan ... got the feeling I bring them bad luck. If you look at the score sheet you will see that the game was lost on the free throw line. GO MYSTICS! beat the Silver Stars.

Can't win consistently at this point in the season having only 9(really 8) players. The season takes a toll and I think the Mystics are just plan tired both mentally (turnovers) and physically. I don't look for much from them the rest of the season. They should be peaking not puttering at this point in the season!

I think that's an excuse. They had 10 days off. Lindsay is not giving us the scoring she did earlier. We need a 3rd scorer. Of courser if anyone should be tired it's Lindsay. Mo isn't the same either.

fr mike,

Don't blame yourself. You do not bring the team bad luck.

It's all Mechelle Voepel's fault...she's the jinx.

BCs, it seems like the Mystics have hit a bit of a wall since Voepel wrote that glowing piece on them. You warned it might happen and here we are! UGH!

We still have to watch the game. I guess when there are ESPN games on, Live Access doesn't show any of the other games. So we ended up watching the NY and Seattle games online. Wow - to see Seattle come from 18 points behind and win it....

But looking at the box score and play by play and what you guys have said, it doesn't look like it was a stellar game.

We've got to bring it on Thursday (and then Friday, and then Sunday - geesh!) Go Mystics!!!

Does anyone else feel that perhaps we should have taken a look at Keisha Brown or maybe Ivory Latta when they were still available. It appears that they are contributing to their team. Houts is not contributing much. Lindsey is still overworked.

I don't understand Julie's hesitation to play Ashley more....but it seems like Matee is really playing backup point. Lindsay is still overworked for sure. Then again, so is Crystal but playing the point is different, I think.

is anyone beginning to question our coaches decisions? for all the reasons mentioned- Houts not playing, Linds overworked... and she's not really giving anyone else the opportunity down the stretch... hope they "right the ship" sooner than later! They're too talented, have worked so hard, and fans have waited soooo long for things to click. :o)
I gotta believe "we" will turn it around-right now! DEFENSE, playing together, sharing the ball...

GO MYSTICS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think we are getting a little carried away. If you compare our lineup/depth against the other teams it is a minor miracle we have the record we do. To say we are too talented is a stretch to say the least. I think as someone mentioned before that it could be that we are getting tired. With regards to coaching I am not sure what else they could do, Harding has not been playing well and Houts is a huge drop off from that. I credit the coaches with making sure the squad never gives up and they fight game in and game out.

But why bring in a player that you can only play 5 minutes or less when there were other people available that could give Lindsey more of a blow? I just don't understand. If we are making a push to win the East we can't afford to develop a point guard. We need a legitimate backup right now. Otherwise I am quite pleased with our coach and GM.

What happened to Sanford and Melvin? They are playing horrible. Turnovers again tonight killed us. Lindsay is not the same player as before the break. They don't look good at all right now. Sloppy. I think I have to take a break from watching them for a while.
