Climbing Higher. Last night, the Mystics got a bit closer to locking up a playoff berth as they beat the Sparks in Los Angeles, 80-75, while the Liberty failed to take care of business in Phoenix, falling to the Mercury, 97-86. The Mystics' 4th win in a row, combined with New York's loss, not only kept the Mystics in 4th place in the East but also opened up a 2-game lead on the Libs for that spot, and a 2.5 game lead on the Sky, who were idle on Thursday.

Having far too much respect for our loyal blog readers, the BasketCases will not pretend that we listened to a game that did not start until 10:30pm EDT on a school night, so we will send you for details to the AP story and the box score. Being astute readers, however, we will note, that Alana Beard led all scorers with 22, and now needs only 2 more points to reach 2,000 in her WNBA career.

After the Mystics' 0-8 start, the team's once improbable quest for post-season play moves to Seattle on Saturday, where it now seems likely that the Storm will have the assistance of Superstar Lauren Jackson, who is reported to be flying back from Australia today after a short trip home to visit an ailing family member.

Very nice run by our ladies. Now, it gets tougher. Seattle (who owes us one) and Sac coming up before they retrn to the "Phone Booth." We REALLY need Delisha and Curry to show up. They've both been very spotty.

Since Mystics started 0-8, wouldn't it be neat if they ended regular season 9-0!?! Not exactly the "worst to first" turn around of Detroit a few years back, but it would be impressive. I think it would also put Coach Tree in the mix for "coach of the year."

Any support for Kia Sanford for "Most Improved Player?" I don't have all the details regarding criteria for the award, but for my 2 cents, it should not go to a player in 2nd or 3rd year in the league, as they are going through a natural pro development. I think it should go to a player that has been in the league 3+ years and has shown a growth spurt. I also don't think that it should go to a player that had low stats due to injury the previous year (as there is some talk about Whalen for MIP).

I also like Aisha Jones for MIP. Geez, who drafted her and traded her away? ... and who did the Mystics get for her? Hint: traded big for small point guard (... a move that many think is never a good idea). Answer: Tamika Jackson. Is she even still in the league?

Thank you for your interest in the Betty Ann Robinson Foundation fundraiser. Here is some general information about the event.

Nakia Sanford’s BOWLING WITH THE STARS fundraiser is taking place at Lucky Strike (attached to Verizon center). This is a great opportunity for everyone to come out and support Nakia’s foundation as well as have fun bowling with Mystics players and win great prizes. A silent auction will take place during the event. Key autographed items include all-star shoes from Alana Beard and DeLisha Milton-Jones; Gilbert Arenas Washington Wizards jersey; basketballs from the Washington Mystics, and other collectors items from the Connecticut Sun, Chicago Sky, Seattle Storm, and Sacramento Monarchs.

A minimum donation of 20$ will be accepted at a designated table during the Washington Mystics game on the 14th against the Connecticut Sun, and on the 16th against the New York Liberty. With your donation you will receive a ticket that admits one into the VIP area of the fundraiser and enters you into numerous raffles for a chance to win prizes. Tee- shirts that say, “I helped Nakia Sanford Raise the B.A.R. will also be available for 15 dollars. This is a great option if you want to show your support, but are not able to attend the event. We hope to see you there!!!!!!!

Sincerely,

Nakia Sanford
