Beijing Here We Come! Team USA guaranteed themselves an opportunity to defend their 2004 Olympic Gold Medal by defeating Cuba today to win the FIBA Americas Championship.
The USA opened the game with a 16-0 run. That pretty much tells the story. With an Olympic berth on the line, the USA displayed intensity, teamwork and superior skill, and Cuba never had a chance. The final score was 101-71. Games that lopsided typically aren't much fun to watch, but this was different, because it was our national team playing for something that really mattered. It was great to see them play so well in such an important contest. Congratulations to the entire USA team and coaching staff!! Good luck in Beijing!
The next time we see the USA National Team, it will be at Comcast Center on Halloween as they tip off their 8-game college tour with a match against the Terps. To say that the BasketCases are excited about seeing that game would be an understatement. Just to be clear, though, and while we are as patriotic as any American, we'll be rooting for the women in red (not the red, white and blue)! Go Terps!

And, let's just say: Cuba did not give up and just roll over! They continued to play hard, right to the final buzzer. Good for them!!
Also, d'ya think NBA-TV could have sprung for someone who was bi-lingual to do some translating for all the FIBA and Chilean officials who were speaking during the medal ceremony?! Taj Franklin did a decent job of color commentary, and I'm not suggesting NBA should have removed her, but adding someone who speaks Spanish would have been helpful!
We're soooooo bummed that the MD-USA game is Halloween. We'd love to go, but don't dare disappoint the goblins. Glad we caught the Trenton game.
