Alana Beard Expected to Miss the Season!!!

Late this afternoon, the Mystics announced that "Mystics guard Alana Beard will undergo ankle arthroscopy and ankle tendon repair surgery next week. She is expected to miss the 2010 WNBA season."

First, and most important, we hope that AB's surgery is a success and that she has a full and complete recovery.

Second, ARGH!!!! What else can we say? Just when it seemed like the curse that has plagued this franchise had finally been lifted last season -- a new brain trust, steps in the right direction on the court, making the playoffs, fun for the fans -- and we have great new additions to the team for the coming season -- this happens. We are sad for Alana, sad for the team, and sad for every Mystics fan.

When I saw the headline on WNBA.com I did a double-take. I just couldn't believe it. As always, your comments said it all. You always seem to "hit the nail on the head"
All the best to AB. She will be missed.

Crazy idea, but is there any possibility the Mystics could pick up Deanna Nolan this year? She's saying she won't play for Tulsa, and she's close to Katie Smith. I don't know her contractual obligations, though. Maybe she can only play for Tulsa. But it sure would be Tweet to have on our team!

This makes the Katie Smith signing even bigger, although I'd rather have her come off the bench to spell Lindsey Harding instead of having to start for Alana, unless you're going to put Matee Ajavon in her starting spot. While this is a HUGE blow, it might be the time to apply Bill Simmons' "Ewing Theory," where a team becomes hot, plays better and wins important games without the player who represents its face or is known as its best player. Time will tell. This is why you need depth. Time for someone to step up! Get well soon, Alana!

Horrible news. someone else will really need to step up. I am hoping its Marissa and Mo. Now is their time. Best of luck to AB. Get healthy soon!

How did this happen? Aggravation of prior injury? She's been in town working out, no?

What a shame! I only hope for successful surgery and recovery and she comes back better than ever! She has been around this off season, apprearing at a number of events, wonderfully representing the franchise, as usual!! We really wish her all the best.
Much love.

YIKES!

Just about the Worst News Imaginable, though the Stics just might have enough talent to make the playoffs. Getting beyond the first round will probably be tough. If Currie plays a lot of minutes at the 2-guard maybe Kristen Mann will stick with the team, and attain more importance. Gotta lose that zoo-hate, though!

IMHO the "Ewing Theory" can be viable in the short run, not so much over a long stretch.

I send all the best wishes to Alana for a speedy recovery. However, I have faith in the current coach, GM, and players that this is just a small setback for them. Time for the team to be THE TEAM instead of Alana being THE TEAM.

GO TEAM!!

Yep, I agree, time for other folks to step up besides Lindsay Harding and Crystal. We will really need Marissa to come into her own this year and Mo to have a great season.

We have Linds and Lang as our cornerstone, and like I said when she played at MD, "In Riss We Trust"! :o) Marissa will be fine... others will need to follow suit. It would be nice to see an "M&M" show starring both Marissa and Monique! mcb

If it had to be this year, or next year that AB would be out, I would prefer this year. This gives an extra space for a youngum to learn and has AB healthy enough for next season to help take us to the championship. I also have great faith in the team that we will make it deeper into the playoffs this season. Can't wait for the games to begin.

Why was Nicki Blue resigned? She never played last year...and now Katie Smith is signed. Odd. They have 20 people on the roster and only 11 make the team.

Well, ask the New York Giants about that after Tiki Barber retired. Meantime, I do scratch my head over the Nikki Blue re-signing. But, whatever brings more competition and brings out the best in everyone.

Signing a player doesn't mean that they stay with the team. But who isn't coming to training camp. Aren't they only allowed 15 in camp?

This is a good time for other players to shine and make a difference.
