Not About The $Money$

** Sunday morning update . . . Mel Greenberg, who broke the news yesterday of Angela's departure, has more on his blog today, here**

When the BCs read Dr. J's two-sentence statement this afternoon explaining that Angela Taylor was no longer with the Mystics because her contract had expired and the team could not reach "a new deal to retain her," we couldn't imagine what insurmountable stumbling block in the negotiations could have caused the Mystics to lose THE BEST GM IN FRANCHISE HISTORY. But there was one thing we truly believed . . . that it wasn't about the money.

This evening, Angela herself spoke out via Twitter, and had this to say:

Thanks 2 Mystics fans players & staff for two incredible years. I'm proud of what we were able 2 accomplish & wish u the best in the future.

For the record, I've been vested in the W for 14 years. It's never been about the money. It's about respect & doing things the right way!

So we were right. But being right doesn't make us feel one iota better. We're still sitting here depressed . . . feeling like we were sucker-punched. When Greg Bibb introduced us to Angela two years ago, we became immediate fans of the new GM. Sometimes you just sense that someone is the right person, in the right job, at the right time. We felt that about Angela. And in the 24 months since then, that feeling has been reinforced time and time and time again. We really came to like, and we really came to respect, Angela.

And now she's gone. We expect she will land on her feet, career-wise. The great ones alway do. But as for the Mystics, well, only time will tell. In our opinion, the Mystics organization has suffered yet another major loss. Just as we were beginning to put the playoff disappointment behind us and begin to look ahead to the Mystics + Alana 2011 season, we now have to cope with losing THE BEST GM IN FRANCHISE HISTORY.

We've been fans of the WNBA since before there even was a Mystics team. And, maybe we're just getting old and our memories are fading, but neither one of us can remember any WNBA team losing a successful coach or GM because they couldn't "reach an agreement" on a contract renewal. It's just unprecedented in our recollection. Until the Mystics finished first in the regular season this year, most of the "firsts" in Mystics history were things we wish we could forget. And today the list grows longer. Now, we can add this: the first time a team couldn't find a way to retain THE BEST GM IN THEIR FRANCHISE HISTORY.

For the last two seasons, we finally felt like the Mystics "got it" and that the team was on the right track. Angela was the linchpin that held it all together. We don't know anybody who didn't like -- and respect -- her.

How could this happen? We feel sick.

Angela, thank you, we will miss you.

This just makes no sense what so ever. Way to go Ted and Sheila. Why, why, why.....

Ted's numerous blog posts about accountability and transparency and commitment to the community ring a little hollow about now. Maybe he was busy working on new Caps jerseys and lost track of this developing story.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like AT wanted to do things "right" and upper management wanted something different. What could have been the dispute?

I'm sick about the loss of a quality GM and a genuinely nice person too.

Is Julie Plank safe?

Not a smart move by the owners.

Plank better be back next year, or I may finally have to give up on this organization.

Newark isn't that far away.

I thought we got rid of that revolving door. This is devastating! It makes no sense at all!

I hope that people are making their thoughts known to Sheila and Ted, referencing this blog, other sports blog comments, etc. I did not want to be concerned about the change in ownership, yet now have great concerns. Also a fan of WNBA before there was a Mystics and an original season ticket holder, this is just plain bad nes. Angela, if you read this, you have been a class act--I respect you personally and professionally and only wish you the best.

How do you make your feelings known to Ted or Sheila?? I don't Twitter.

I am shocked and saddened and furious and........Angela and Julie gave us hope for the Mystics for seasons to come-but now...I just can't believe it. We had wonderful opportunities to interact with Angela, including a trip with the team to San Antonio, and she and the entire organization were wonderful, gracious, and really treated us original season ticket holders with respect.

Angela, you are a class act, who will be missed-but we want to keep you supplied with the cookies.

We know you will continue to enjoy much success-not sure if the Mystics will.

PS: Juanita is rethinking her season tickets.

I wonder if Greg Bibb had any role in this mess-Mr. Basketball for the Wizards and the Mystics?

If Ted allowed Sheila to side with Bibb over Angela, then he needs to recheck his double bottom line.

THIS IS ALL SADNESS! HOW SICK ARE WE? BEST OF LUCK TO THE MYSTICS! BEST OF LUCK TO ANGELA! AND, LORD HAVE MERCY ON THE MYSTIC FANS.

Don't think a massive email flood to Sheila and Ted can change anything, but we need to let them know how incredibly upset and ticked we are. Does anyone have email addresses for this crazy duo?

I saw Greg Bibb at the Wizards Fan Fest today and, not surprisingly, he had no comment on it. You can reach Ted at washingtoncaps@aol.com

I'm really surprised Johnson would let someone so respected get away...has Sheila's role with this team diminished that much...is she little more than a figurehead now?

I smell a rat......... Someone didn't communicate to Sheila or Ted about Angela's important position. I'd be checking Mr. Bibb.

Figures, this year I actually renewed early since the team did so well and seemed to be heading in the wrong direction. I should have known better.

Oops, meant I thought they were heading in the RIGHT direction. Freudian slip.

Penny Says If discrimination due to gender, is indeed, the reason Angela felt obligated to resign, I'm totally behind her actions. I identify myself as a feminist at my basic core self. Now, as a Mystic's founding fan, my heart is broken that this cha...in of events have forced out this very competent GM. This season, Mystic's fans were able to see a small light at the end of a very long, dark tunnel. Now, I fear that this light will be extinguished with the loss of Angela Taylor. and the strong relationships shared between Angela and the coaching staff. Cohesion is such an important aspect to forming a successful team. Angela and the coaching staff shared strong relationships built over many years working together. Management threw that important cohesion away, when they were unable to come to terms with Angela. I guess I will never know what took place and the reasons behind this decision. Right now, regardless of Sheila Johnson being a co-owner, gender discrimination seems to be monumental at Monumental. I hope Sheila is not allowing the "boy's money" to trump her REALLY supporting women's sports and helping to define women's lives.

Ted blogged today about "a weekend of fan celebration." I guess we know where his interests lie.

I wish Angela Taylor would give us a clue. I really don't understand it. Successful teams bring in money. It's in their best interest to keep AT. It just makes no business sense. At the end of the day, it's always about money. Ted has money so what gives?? Also, what I hate sometimes about womens bball is you get no answers. No one is talking about it, so they don't have to explain themselves. Imagine if the lakers couldn't come to an "agreement" with their GM. We would know all about it....

Anybody know Katie Carrera at the Post? She has a new beat now but covered the Mystics for the past year or so. It would be good to see if she could instigate getting a story on AT's departure. There was absolutely no mention of it in today's paper.

Kathy Orton, who is now covering the Mystics for the Post, has a story up this evening.

As you would expect, nobody's talking.

They have given Greg Bibb too much power. He is screwing up the Mystics, just like he did the Detroit Expansion. He is the one that needs to be out of there!

I would just like to agree with what everyone else has said. What a loss for the franchise.
