Most. Losses. Ever.

The Mystics' nightmare of a season finally ended last night, in San Antonio, where Washington lost to the Silver Stars, 82-74. There's not much to say about the game, except that Mo Currie started (the good news), the Mystics gave up two 12-point leads along the way to defeat (the bad news), and Marissa finished up the season in Trudi's doghouse (arf, just news). Riss played a total of only five minutes behind Mo and behind Kerri Gardin.

But if you were worried that Marissa was lonely in the doghouse, don't be. Vicky Dunlap kept her company most of the night. Vicky, whose rookie season started with a great deal of promise, saw her season end with just 1:50 minutes of playing time at the very conclusion of a game that had already been decided. Arf, Arf.

However the most significant news from last night's loss is that the Mystics finished out the season with a record of 6-28. 28 losses -- a staggering number for a 34-game season, and the most ever for the franchise. More losses than in the Mystics' 1998 inaugural season of 3-27.

We said the other day that we never expected to see 27 losses again in a single season. And now we have to say that we never, ever, ever expected to see 28! That this franchise record-setting number of losses came directly following the season of franchise record wins -- 22 (thank you again, Angela and Julie) -- makes it that much more astounding, and that much worse.

The absolute worst part of this horrific season, though, is that it didn't need to play out this way. Much of the damage to the team, and all of the damage to the franchise's fan loyalty and enthusiam (not to mention trust), was entirely self-inflicted.

First to Worst -- that single phrase sums up the story of the 2011 Mystics, a story of failure that is much more about The Sheila & Co. than it is about the players. One day soon, the BCs plan a separate post . . . a season wrap-up of our thoughts about all this. But today is not that day. Today, September 11th, is a day for thinking about and remembering more important things. So our Mystics wrap up will have to wait.

For now, all we can say is, thank goodness this season is over for the Mystics players . . . and for their fans.

For the first time this season, we can go to sleep knowing their record can't get any worse...it's done. Thankfully. Kudos to the team for sticking it out until the end. I can't say the same for the coach.

I just don't understand Marissa playing behind Gardin. I'm really puzzled. Might be the last time we see her in a Mystics uniform. If so, I hope she gets on another team and crushes the Mystics every time she plays us in the future if Trudy Lacy is still the coach. Sorry, it's just how I feel.

Thank you DCBC for your strong support of the Mystic team and players. I too look forward to your separate post about the overall season.

IMHO, Any scenario for next season that includes Sheila Johnson remaining as an owner is doomed. At this point no free agents will sign with this team as trust in her leadership abilities has been completely broken. And no free agents means no chance of significant improvement, thanks to giving up their lottery pick in the next draft.

Hey hey! Ho ho! Sheila Johnson must GO GO GO!

I attended the party that the Mystics had for those who renewed. Oddly, Sheila wasn't there. I wonder why.

SooooooooooBizarre. Maybe she's selling the team or better yet moving out of DC>

Hope she takes Trudy with her and what about the whereabouts of Greg Bibb??? He sure kept a low profile this year.

Stewart - What was the STH event like tonight? What players were there? Coaches? Get any clues about future directions?

All the players were there except Alana - at least I did not see her - and DeMya, who I believe stayed home in Texas. Trudi, Maryanne, yes, Laurie, no. I did not see Navin. Bibb was there. Everyone was very gracious and engaging, especially considering how tired and diappointed they must be. Trudi gave her usual "young team, gaining experience" routine, but with a positive slant aimed toward the future. I think from her comments and from what she said on the final episode of Mystics Magazine (which they played on the jumbotron), she clearly sees Jasmine as the point guard of the future.

Overall it was an enjoyable event, albeit a bit crowded - the Acela Club wasn't really big enough. I was a little disappointed in Dr. Sheila's and Ted's absences. Given that only early renewals were in attendance, seems to me it wasn't going to be an outlet for fan venting.

Not sure if this is the proper place for this question, but I was wondering where I could find photos from season ticket holder events from both this year and previous years. I know the BC's will usually post a few from events they've been to, but I don't recall seeing nearly as many pictures from Mystics fans as I do other teams. If anybody knows where I could find some online, i'd love to check them out.

I too await the BC's final words on the Mystics' season.... but also...

Since MD women released their schedule today, I'm so ready to move on.

11:14 am - the Mystics sometimes post event photos on the website, under Multimedia, and/or on Facebook. It's been very hit-or-miss this year.

Go Terps!! Looking forward to watching my other favorite team...the one that is well coached. :)

Looking foward to seeing Laurin Mincy play. I don't think we saw what she can do last year since she was recovering from her injury.

Sheila was in Uganda for her AIDS Charity. DeMaya owns a home in Texas. Alana was at Duke seeing the Dr. Great event and food. Very crowded. Players were amazingly upbeat and friendly especially Jazmine. Most going abroad except Mo. CLang staying around for a while.

Mo's not going abroad this winter?

This seems as good a place as any to bring this up, so i'll just say that Langhorne did not sound thrilled recently that Beard and Currie were supposed to attend the "Sneaker Ball" event that some Mystics players attend every year and apparently bailed on her. I have never seen a player attend fewer "appearances" than Alana Beard. That can't possibly sit well with teammates.

Mo might have been waiting to build some cred in her last few games to enhance her saleability overseas.

Given how well she performed, it might well work out better for her.

Thanks to those who mentioned looking on the Mystics website, but I was more interested in sets of photos fans had taken.

Mo is talking to some teams in Israel per her father.
