The Flip Side

Yesterday, the Washington Wizards announced that Head Coach Flip Saunders had been fired 17 games into the strike-shortened NBA season, after guiding the team to a 2-15 start.

Last summer, Mystics Head Coach Trudi Lacey led her team to a 6-28 record for the 2011 WNBA season . . . including a 3-14 record for her first 17 games.

The Mystics' owners, the same people who own and manage the Wizards, praised Lacey's performance at the conclusion of the Mystics' 2011 season, and made it clear that she would be welcomed back for the 2012 season.

I have a sneaky feeling that Jen Gillom will be the next Mystics Head Coach...hmmm

Great another crappy coach. Feel sorry for the players.

Wasn't it Flip's third year? I think if Trudi had such a miserable record in her third year, she'd get axed too.

I haven't heard anything about Marianne Stanley. Does anyone know if she's coming back?

question....what is the status of Alana Beard? Is she a mystic? free agent? if so, will mystics resign? is she healthy/playing overseas? Just curious....thanks for any updates.

Trudy didn't talk about AB at all in the interviews on the mystics website.

that's how the mystics work, fire the coach/gm that gets you to the playoffs, keep the losers.

I could survive another crappy season from the Mystics if I knew for sure that Trudi Lacey would be fired at the end of it. There will be a lot of good people in the 2013 draft including Griner, Donne and Diggins. I would also need to know that the Mystics owners would take the time and make the financial commitment necessary to find a good coach/G.M. That is what it would take for me to renew my season tickets for the 14th time. I know that won't happen so I guess I will be watching the Mystics on television or the internet this year. Unless America's Got Talent is on at the same time :-)

As a Mystics and Wizards season ticket holder, I'll throw a little perspective from the Wizards side. Flip was given more than two years to show what he can do and granted, he had a lot of player turnover and turmoil, and his firing isn't his fault for the most part. Either way, the results weren't there. The Wizards tuned him out and/or the players are just not NBA worthy. Probably both. Minus John Wall, everyone is tradeable.

For the Mystics, I think it's only fair that Lacey be given a fair shot and last year wasn't fair for her. We can continue to belabor on the 2010-11 offseason (which we all are still apoplectic about), but I'm resigned to the fact that this season will be a wash because no good UFA's will want to play here and maybe other teams want to woo Langhorne and/or Currie. The good news about a bad season this year is that we have a chance at Griner, Diggins, and Delle Donne for 2013, but with our luck, we will miss out on them with the ping pong balls. Unless Trudi has a trick up her sleeve (I doubt it), I expect this season to be ugly in the W-L record most because we won't have the talent, and when we're close in a game, we'll still give the game up anyway.

I want all of our area pro teams to play well, including the Ted-owned Wizards and Capitals. However, as a Mystics fan, you almost have to wonder if a "what goes around comes around" situation has hit the Wizards and Caps this year (both teams not playing up to expectations and the coaches get fired), as an act of retribution from God for what happened to the Mystics...

Did you all hear the Mystics have traded Marissa Coleman to the Sparks for Noelle Quinn? Thoughts?

Although I really hate to see Marissa go, this might be best for her career to be able to play with a well-seasoned coach and with players like Candace Parker and Tina Thompson (assuming she returns). And playing with the Sparks gives her a better chance of getting a ring. The Mystics always somehow find a way to shoot themselves in the foot. Check out the ticket sales this year.

Right on dcsportsfan!, "what goes around has come around" for Monumental sports, and everyone knows "vengence is mine saith the Lord". Not to mention: "You get what you pay for"
