Congratulations to Terp Seniors Anjale Barrett and Lynetta Kizer, both of whom were selected today in the 2012 WNBA draft!

The BCs were definitely expecting one Maryland player to be heading off to a WNBA training camp this summer . . . but two? That's a bonus . . . what a pleasant surprise!

This afternoon, Anjale was selected with the 26th overall pick by the Washington Mystics -- a team notoriously in need of depth at the point guard position.

Minutes later, the Tulsa Shock used the 29th overall pick on Netta. The Shock is a team that could certainly benefit from some help in the post. So, while it's far from home, Tulsa could be a good opportunity for Netta.

With WNBA rosters capped at 11 players, it's tough to make a team these days, but both Anjale and Netta have each been given a real chance to make one. Let's hope they do!

Congratulations and good luck, Anjale and Netta! You were drafted by the WNBA . . . now that's cool!

P.S. Daphne, better bring that ball to the Banquet!

Thoughts on the rest of the Mystics' draft picks?

Novosal I think will be good. We need others beside Mo that can shoot the 3. Plus she is crafty with the ball. Not sure Barrett makes the team but happy she gets a shot.

I don't know much about the LSU player.

Listening to the ESPN draft crew, when Washington's turn came for their first pick, Pam Ward said - I don't know what is going on in Washington---they sky rocketed from first to worst...or words to that effect.Rebecca Lobo said plummeted was more like it. The Mystics rep around the league is well mysterious...and not in a good way.

The ESPN crew was raving about LaSondra Barett from LSU, her versatility... in that she can play all positions, very basketball savy etc...

Sigh....so it begins again,the
15th year of Mystics madness.

Not like anything can be considered normal when it comes to the Mystics but I found it particularly odd that their twitter broadcasted the Anjale pick like 3 picks ahead of time.

I hope Anjale at least finds some play overseas. I'm guessing she will.

I'm so looking forward to seeing the Terps next season. Can't we just fast forward to September/October. B Mosely I think will turn out to be very, very good. Better than Anjale. I think she could be the key to the team next year. PG play is so important. And I can't wait to see how Mincy comes back next season--she could be very special.

I'm actually more excited to see the Sparks than the Mystics. The Mystics have Mo/Lang/Matee and that's it. A very very good starting 3--but after that, sorry, it's a no go. Oh, how I miss L Harding. :( For 1 season we had a great point guard.

It really hurt to see the ESPN crew clown the Mystics like that. What's worse, though, is that they were absolute right.

As for the poster above me, I think Jasmine Thomas was continue to improve at point with another year under her belt and having played overseas. And let's not forget the acquistion of Ashley Robinson from Seattle. I think she'll be a positive for this team.

Just trying to keep hope alive.

Jasmine THomas--Lindsay Harding, no comparison. Can't really compare--Lindsay is a great point guard period...top 3 PG's in the league in my opinion.

BCs: As Terp insiders, can you explain to us non-alum what's up with all the MD publicity we're getting in the DC area? There have been lots of tv commercials touting the school recently, and this morning I saw that they'll be holding a Maryland Day open house (next week?). What's the benefit of these expenses to a school that's cutting sports and raising student activity fees?

You do realize that MD athletics are wholly self-supporting, i.e., separate from the funds devoted to the academic institution? I would suspect that the majority of the funds you note would come from the university as a whole since Maryland Day, which is held annually, tends to be a showcase for the school at large.

I did a bit of research on the web,to clarify "MD athletics are wholly self-supporting". Apparently the school loaned the athletics department $1 million recently because of a shortfall. "Nearly 8 percent of Maryland’s athletics revenue in 2009-10 came from direct institutional support, and more than 17 percent came from student fees, according to USA Today’s college athletics finance database. (Maryland’s total revenue from those two streams is still significantly lower than the national FBS average of 60 percent.) It got about 18 percent each from contributions and conference revenues, and more than 23 percent from ticket sales.

BCs: it's been over two weeks since your last post and Mystics training camp (along with camps in the rest of the WNBA, of course) is underway. Methinks this calls for a post!

Where is A Barrett in the training video's? Is she at the training camp? Also, where is Mattee and Jasmine Thomas?

Anjale is injured. There is an interview with her on the Mystics Website under Training Camp Central. but I noticed this morning (5/8) that she is not listed on the training camp roster.

What about Jasime and Matee though?? anybody know? I saw that Lang is now in camp but again, no Mattee of JThomas.

Where are the BCs?

Still NOTHING on the Mystics or how some of the local girls are doing with their new teams?? (ie. Coleman, Kizer)
Anjale was released after her high ankle sprain kept her out since day 1 of camp....matee will be ready to go by end of May (knee). Thats all I know but hopefully basketcases will update us all soon.

Perhaps we can convince the LadySwish folks to start covering some of the Maryland folks, and Mystics.

The BCs aren't paid to do this. They write this great blog out of love for the game and the players. I would like to hear their thoughts on things but they are entitled to have a life too. So I will be happy when they post but in the meantime I can use 'the Google' to find out what is going on with local teams and former players.

I agree Anonymous at 12:03.

The BC's are doing this as basketball fans. They also mentioned last year in a blog post that they were very disaffected from the October Massacre and may not be writing as much on the Mystics like they did in previous years. Preseason game starts today vs. the Sun. Hope they look competitive.
