0 and 7. It was a tough loss for the Mystics at home tonight against Indy. This time, it wasn't the 4th quarter that was the problem for DC, but the first half, as the Mystics dug themselves a 12-point hole before the break (after being behind by as much as 18!). It's hard to come back from a deficit like that against a team as good as the Fever, but the Mystics didn't give up, and managed to tie the game in the last few minutes. Unfortunately, they never got over the hump, losing 74-69. Some positives tonight: the Mystics committed fewer turnovers and fouls, and rebounded better. What cost them the game was insufficient offense, including missing 14 of their first 15 shots. The BasketCases do want to give a shout out to Alana Beard, who is clearly playing in pain but still giving it her all, scoring 23 points tonight despite her sore shoulder.

The Mystics' 0-7 start ties the WNBA record for the second worst start to a season.

But the Good News is: We just saved a lot of money on our car insurance Mystics Refrigerator Magnets were delivered today!! We picked ours up at half time at Guest Services, and now it's proudly displayed on our fridge. (Okay, we're taking our good news where we can find it.)

There cannot be ANYTHING positive in an 0-7 record. Period.

I disagree with the above comment. A good fridge schedule goes a long way. :) Are they available for STHs or anyone? Where? When?

On a more serious note, I agree.. 0-7 is not good at all, but there were a lot of bright points last night -- Sanford, Teasley, Lovelace, Currie, Beard... all stepped up. I can only imagine what they would be like if they had been together BEFORE we were 7 games into the season KT

I'm afraid to ask but what is the league record for worst start, anyway?

LOL. The mags were available to anyone at Guest Services (on the main concourse near section 102).

Now our 10-year collection is complete! :-)

P.S. 0-13

There were definitely positives - OTHER than the fridge magnet! - to last night's game. Well, at least in the 2nd half. I felt like they were actually trying to rebound rather than just going through the motions and there were some great defensive stops. Really, there was just more intensity. The offense...yeah, that still stinks, but hopefully that will come. A good number of jump shots looked rushed and were shot with a fair bit of timidity, but if you're not making jack, it's hard to shoot with confidence.

And can we get a friendly bounce or roll from the rims? Jeez!

I'm feeling pretty hopeful, though.

Our new theory is that you two aren't taking care of your basket! Whichever team plays at our end (near the home bench) gets the friendly roll from the rim. Whichever team plays at your end (near the visitor bench) gets the evil basket. It was even true with Indiana last night -- though it seems Catch can charm even evil baskets.

(Thanks for letting us know about the magnets -- I'll have to see if they still have any left Wednesday night.)

To answer Everett W.'s question, the league's record for worst start is held by the 2002 Detroit Shock who went 0-13. The next year, Detroit won the 2003 Championship (worst to first).

The Mystics next 6 games in order are NY, Phoenix, LA, Phoenix, Houston and Chicago. Ideally, we'll win at NY and not have the second worst start record to ourselves and can go on to win more games.

About last night's game, Lovelace looked good. I would have liked to have seen Laurie Koehn in the 1st quarter when the shots weren't going in. At one point the corner scoreboard showed the FG% at 13%.

Read this article on the WNBA website for teams that have gone on to the playoffs after bleak beginnings.

Here's to breaking the Mystics odd year curse!

I can't recall the year (2000 or 2001), the Sting started out 0-10 and then went on to win the conf championship. I'm not holding my breath, but there is hope. We need DMJ to get out of her slump. Single digit scoring just won't do.

I wonder if DMJ's eye is causing the shooting problem. Her 3 pt shot are not arching as before.

In 2001, the Sting lost 11 of their first 12 games (not 0-10) and then went on to win the Eastern Conference. This was one of the bleak beginnings that I referred to in the post above.

I don't know where the one win came, but it must have been in the first seven games, otherwise we wouldn't be tied with 1999 Cleveland for the second worst start. It might have even been against us since we finished last in the conference (10-22). It was an ODD year...

Mystics website says 6'5" center Yelena Leuchanka was signed today. What do the Basketcases think about this?

I know we're all down about being winless, but don't forget to vote for the All-Star game. Alana should be a starter this year by votes when we host!

Teasley may be out of condition. She's always seemed chunky for a point guard and now that she's no longer in her early 20s she might be running out of gas earlier. Early in the second half she made a postive impact, but later on she spent a few key minutes on the bench with the game still very winnable (and I don't think it was due to the spectacular play of the reserve guards). In any case, she played the fewest minutes of any of the starters, IIRC, and her mumbers are down.

Just read that Teasley's been dealing with a knee injury, but still I wonder if the extra weight's making recovery less smooth. Also, in my previous post I of course meant to type that her numbers, not her "mumbers," are down. For all I know her mumbers may be up.
