Mark Your Calendars!

On Tuesday, March 16, at 1PM, the Mystics will be holding a press conference at the Verizon Center to announce the signing of "one of the most prestigious additions in Mystics history." All renewed season ticket holders have been invited to this press conference (another good reason to renew if you haven't done so already). In addition, there will be a "Meet and Greet" with the newest Mystic that evening at Bar Louie, also for renewed STHs.

In the entire history of the Mystics franchise, the team has never been able to sign a single major free agent. Not one. (Quite honestly, until recently, most big stars with other options simply didn't want to play here.) So regardless of who this player might be (and, yes, the BCs do have a particular player in mind . . . but we're only guessing), we think her signing will be a big breakthrough for the franchise, a message that things are turning around here in D.C. and that WNBA players recognize it.

Press conference and Meet & Greet on Tuesday, followed by St. Patrick's Day on Wednesday . . . wow, this has all the makings of a very fun week!

In other Mystics news . . . Alana Beard and Lindsey Harding were among the 12 players just added to the 2010-2012 USA Basketball Women's National Team roster from which the 2010 USA World Championship Team and 2012 Olympic Team will be selected. Congratulations to AB and Lindsey!

My guess would be Katie Smith. Perhaps, she wants to stay on the East Coast rather than move to Tulsa with the rest of the Shock. And, doesn't she have a "special friend" on the Mystics?

Could it be Lauren Jackson?

Lauren Jackson said she'd only play for Seattle, so it can't be her.

It must be Katie Smith, though having a "special friend" wouldn't actually be great for team chemistry.

Yes, I was kind of thinking the same thing about the team chemistry. Although they wouldn't be the first co workers to date.... However, not sure how that works on a sports team.

It's a mistake if it's Katie Smith. The only thing she brings to the table is leadership, especially with her health issues. I can't believe the Mystics would take a chance messing with the team chemistry. What happens if the two parties have a falling out? It would reek havoc on this team, and believe me, we don't need any more drama. I think we have had more than our share!

Who would most likely lose their position if she is signed? Christie Hayne?

A list of free agents: http://www.slamonline.com/online/other-ballers/womens/2010/01/2010-wnba-free-agency-pt-1/

I hope it's not Katie Smith.

Seriously? You hope it's not Katie Smith? I hope this is just one person with a personal issue making multiple posts. If that is representative of the Mystic fan base (and I don't think it is), that's just embarrassing.

You don't want one of the greatest players in the history OF THE SPORT suiting it up for your franchise, because it might cause "chemistry issues"? Really? Find somebody within the sport who thinks Smith is anything other than a consummate pro who brings ZERO chemistry issues to any team.

Sorry to hijack your blog, BC's, but as a former Detroit fan who got to see first hand over the past five years that she's an even better human being than she is a basketball player - reading some of the nonsense in these comments makes me genuinely sad and angry.

I didn't write the "i hope it's not Katie Smith" comment but the person is entitled to their opinion just like you are. Katie is passed her prime. Not saying she couldn't contribute and could be a great leader but she has health issues these days. I would much rather have Penny Taylor but I know that's a crazy long shot. I do think the leadership Katie could bring would be a bonus.

Katie Smith wasn't dating a teammate in Detroit or Minny. This could end up being a BIG Problemento!

Dear Readers,

For the record, the BCs would love to have Katie Smith on the Mystics, if indeed she is the mystery free agent. Katie is a W-I-N-N-E-R. She's an Olympic Gold Medalist, a WNBA superstar, a consummate professional, and she would bring much needed veteran leadership to the team.

I hope that it is not Katie Smith. It would be a huge mistake for the Mystics. If it is, I wonder if I can get a refund on my season tickets. I will ask for one.

If you ask for your refund because of one person, then you are not an asset to the Mystics. There will be 10 other players on the team, but you choose to ignore them because of Katie, who is 90% certainty to be signed on 3/16. I have never liked her because she played for Ohio State, but I have always respected her ability.

Bottom line is she won't make this team any better. That's why I'm not too excited to have her on the team. She is everything and more, but her signing will not improve this team.

I think she could make a difference because of her leadership abilities. The fact is LH never had someone to give her a break. The coaches will trust Katie and therefore, LH will get breaks and will have fresher legs at the end of the season. That will make the team better.

Katie Smith would be a terrific asset for the Mystics. She is still an extraordinarily skilled player and would provide verteran leadership at the point guard position and for the team in general. She would also be a great mentor for LH. Even if Katie does have a special friend on the team, she is certainly mature enought to handle it without adversely affecting team chemistry. I really hope she is the signee.

i'm sure the mystics signed the best player available and considered all of the variables. they know more about what the team needs than we do and hopefully sooner rather than later we will be the best basketball team in dc and in the wnba. i can't wait for the year to begin. go mystics.

Anybody know if Donna Orender will be attending the Mystics' press conference? Or does she only find Tulsa's free agent signings worthy of her presence?
