With About Two Minutes Left in the ballgame and Washington leading the Indiana Fever, 59-57, Comcast's play-by-play announcer, Frank Hanrahan, verbalized the question Mystics fans -- in the arena and those watching at home (including the BCs) -- were asking themselves, "Can they close out?"

A 13-foot jumper by Jessica Davenport and a buzzer-beating lay-up by Shannon Bobbitt answered THE question. No.

Another hard-fought, close game for the Mystics . . . this time against the first place team in the East. But the result was the same . . . a disappointing, last minute loss, at home. Final score: Fever 61, Mystics 59.

We really feel bad for the Mystics players. Matee (19 points) and Lang (17 points) played their hearts out and outscored the Fever's All Stars. Still, it was not enough.

What more can we say? Four close games in a row (three of them at home). Four final-minute (or, in tonight's case, final-second) losses. Season record: 3-14. (Karma?)

Thankfully for the players (and their fans), the Mystics now have a week off to try to figure it all out.

Next up: the Mystics host the Liberty next Saturday (August 6, 7 PM) at the Phone Booth.

What a great game. Even though we lost I saw a spark I haven't seen in a long time.

I think Walker could be a good addition if she could score a little.

The whole Mystics team worked like hell and really deserved the win. I loved Ajavon's swag tonight.

Great atmosphere in the phone booth too.

What a disappointing loss. I really thought they were going to finally pull one out. They played hard tonight. A lot of people on facebook said the coach's late time outs were to blame.

Sigh - hummmmm- geez!!! Arrrrrrrgh!!!! I think we....maybe if..... I JUST DON"T KNOW WHAT TO SAY! OK, let's be positive. We did play a tough defensive game against a great defensive-minded team, but again missed opportunities and momentum-killing time outs. When you have new personnel, from one game to next it seems, you have to expect these things. Sigh.......

Why wasn't Marissa in the game? She was pulled with 6 minutes to play and not seen again until 1 minute left in the game? If it was for defense--well--maybe the coach should have been watching the game--she was playing great D. So why pull her--we needed more scoring threats out there. I know she had a rough night shooting, but Gardin is never an offensive threat, so why would you leave her in the game when we needed scorers out there. Again, Marissa played great D especially in the 2nd half. Trudy's substitutions are mind boggling at times.

And did we all hear Trudy's post game news conference telling us that she feels like they won the last 2 games. News flash---you didn't win, you lost. I feel sorry for the players. To go from having Angela and Julie, to being successful and having such hope about the future of your team and organization to this....feel bad for them. It must be rough. I give them serious props for not throwing in the towel. As fans we should really appreciate and support them just for that alone.

The one good thing we had going into this season was that we probably would end up in the 2012 draft lottery and have a chance at the #1 pick.
But this happened.

The Minnesota Lynx traded Nicky Anosike to the Mystics in exchange for Washington's 2012 first round pick.

This also happened.

Washington Mystics traded Lindsey Harding and a 2012 second round draft pick to the Atlanta Dream in exchange for Ta’Shia Phillips, Kelly Miller and a 2012 first round draft pick.

We have Atlanta's first round pick.
Minnesota has our first round pick.
Unless a miracle happens, Minnesota will have another chance at another #1 pick.

Sheila and Ted took away all hope for this season and next season too. My mom and I have had season tickets since their first season but probably won't renew them.

We always support the players.

I've seen a lot of bad Mystics teams over the years and this isn't one of them. They play so hard and never give up. I wish they had a better coach, but I'm beginning to really love the team.

Unless things are different in the W than NCAA, it isn't the head coach's job to keep track of number of timeouts and player fouls - that's an assistant's job. So Trudy's getting a pass from me.
Okay, now you can blame her for hiring the assistants...

We've done a lot worse in the past with coaches. Trudy gained some props from our section for her forceful commentary to the refs that didn't garner a technical. She was obviously imparting wisdom to the refs, and they were listening. That's a good skill to have.

I kind of hoped for two technicals, see her get ejected, because I am very curious to see how the team might have responded.

They are working hard and I am impressed that Crystal seemed to take the blame for the breakdown on that last play. But I know some post players who would smacked the ball and Bobbitt down when she came into the paint. I guess reaction times may not have been quite quick enough!

Walker really should have been the one to close the lane. She was the help defense. She got caught on the ball fake. It happens. If Marissa would have been in the game, maybe we could of put some more points on the scoreboard so it wouldn't have come down to the last play.

Should have fouled Bobbitt as soon as she got the ball. Maybe it wouldn't have made a difference but at least it would have taken time off the clock and put pressure on the ball handler. And yeah Coleman should have been in the game.
