Panel Discussion

The BCs have heard a lot of griping from fans about an event the Mystics are hosting tomorrow evening (Tuesday) prior to the tip-off against the Silver Stars. Frankly, we don't understand what all the complaining's about.

Fans have been invited to an hour of pre-game networking followed by a panel discussion with Mystics owners Sheila Johnson and Ted Leonsis, as well as new WNBA President Laurel Richie. The cost is only $70, and it includes a ticket to the 7 PM game. It's $60 if you purchase the event ticket in advance, and $40 if you are a season ticketholder.

So why are people griping? Well, it seems quite a few fans think the team owners and WNBA Prez shouldn't be charging for a fan event. But the BCs think the people saying this don't appreciate the value of the opportunity being offered here.

Perhaps because paneling was a major part of our decision to purchase our first home, we "get" how important a panel discussion really is. Way back then, we looked at a lot of townhouses of similar design. But the one in which the basement paneling had been painted white . . . that was the one we ultimately bought. It would never have occurred to us to paint over wood paneling, but you can't believe what a difference it made . . . how the white color just brightened up the room, and actually made the basement seem bigger.

So those of you who don't think tomorrow's event will provide enough bang for your buck, think again. Sheila and Ted are both fabulously wealthy. Who knows how many houses they own between them. In all those houses, collectively, how much paneling do you think they have? We don't know, but we're thinking . . . A LOT. So who better to discuss paneling than Sheila and Ted? (We don't know what President Richie's background in paneling is, but we're guessing, it's extensive . . . otherwise, why would she be part of this event?)

We know there are people out there who just like to complain, but the BCs are not among them. So take our advice: stop all the griping! If you have a paneling issue, or just want to learn more about paneling for future reference, ante up your $70. We guarantee you won't be sorry.

Well hold onto your hammer and nails because I heard a rumor that the panel discussion for Tuesday has been canceled. If this is true I can't wait to hear this explanation.

If it's cancelled, will they have to give both of the people who signed up their money back?

I still don't understand why they cut Christmas? Could have kept her and just cut Gardin and Phillips. Added Walker.

It was canceled and the money paid is being refunded.

Dear BC's, I love the paneling reference, maybe you could get some Plank flooring to go with your white paneling.
I was one of the few people who decided I would go to the panel on the off-chance I could actually talk to someone from mystics management; but today I got a call from my rep telling me the event is cancelled. No reason given. I guess I was the only one who considered going.
I just don't understand what is going on with this team unless it is Karma.

Can I get two weeks in the "How long DeMya Walker will last with the Mystics" pool? I can't believe players around the league didn't try and talk her out of signing.

I hope everybody who played for the Mystics this year gets another job just based on the fact that they continue to compete night in and night out.

Very quickly becoming a worse franchise than Tulsa.

BCs - What's your take on why the Styx cut Phillips? She didn't play much nor did she look that good when she played, but isn't it awful early to give up on a 6'6" center?

Dear Section 100,

Our take is that Trudi may have cut Phillips to free up a roster spot in the event a more desirable player becomes available.

If the Mystics kept Ta'Shia, her salary for the season would be guaranteed. Now, if Ta'Shia isn't picked up off waivers, she could be resigned to a shorter-term contract and let go at any time without a continuing salary obligation.

As for why "give up" on a young 6'6" player, you'd have to ask Trudi . . . we don't know.

According to Mystics broadcaster Christy Winters-Scott, "Phillips is probably a year away from being able to play in the WNBA style. A year overseas will serve her well. Her half-season with the Mystics will help her learn the kind of speed and physicality she'll need to play in the WNBA."

I think signing Walker is a good move. But, I'm still not sure why we let Christmas go.

It would be typical for this Mystics front office if they cut her thinking she would clear waivers and could be signed back, not thinking Tulsa would snap her up.

Too bad about the panel. I would have gone if I didn't already have dinner plans before the game. Perhaps they'll reschedule. Or perhaps this is another "every little thing" that Sheila doesn't need to share.

The roster on the Mystics' Web site still hasn't been updated. Christmas is gone but Ta'Shia is still there and DeMya isn't (perhaps with players coming and going so fast they just can't keep up).
By my reckoning we only have 10 on the roster, and two are out with injuries. I'm seriously thinking Sheila just wants the team to go away, and Trudi is doing a great job of helping her out.

Sheila, Sheila, that name's familiar...
Isn't she that rich woman who used to support the Mystics?

Whatever happened to her?

I decided after the past off season moves by management that they would not get any more of my money, other than what I have already spent on my season ticket. I laughed when they wanted us to pay to hear a "discussion"!! With them...I'll hear from the WNBA President in some other (free) venue. As for Mystics "management" - what can they say. Their actions have spoken volumes!

Also, I'm sorry, you do not trade
6'6"!!!!!

Where's your post from last night's game? It is sad - even the players are starting to say that "We're young", "We aren't finishing games", etc. doesn't help. These girls need good play calling and adjustments from their coaches. Why wasn't Coleman in the game when we were down five points?

At 2:39 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, I thought the same thing, put Coleman in since she was so hot in the first quarter. And Nicki A--good grief, she CAN'T shoot.

thoughts regarding T. Phillips...

1. Harding for Phillips trade with Atlanta..... now means we gave away Lindsey for NOTHING!!

2. Anyone remember Langhorne's rookie year with the great coach Tree Rollins? Hardly any playing time. When she did get in, it was for 1min - 2min spurts. Any blunder, she's yanked (= loss of confidence). Looked lost and confused. .......doesn't that sound like Phillips???

Fast forward... after unproductive rookie year she
a. goes overseas and does well
b. soph year earns MIP
c. next 2 years: ALL-STAR
d. last year: 2nd team all-wnba

good thing our great GM Hardgrove didn't cut Langhorne at the all star break her rookie year!!

d. If Mystics cut Phillips to save having to pay guaranteed contract (remember $40K is what Johnson spends on wine and flowers)... then BAAAAAAD CALLLL!

nuff for now.

I really don't understand getting rid of Phllips or Christmas. Christmas played well when she was in the game. This team is just really bad offensively at times. Last night they just missed so many easy layups. And again, Aisoke is the worst shooter ever. The team is not better with Phillips and Christmas gone and keeping Gardin and adding Walker. Stupid moves.

I think Matee was honest in her post game interview. Being young isn't an excuse--they aren't that young and they should be closing games better. Again, at times they are just bad offensively.

What did the Basketcases think about the San Antonio game?

Thank you for the extra post. Holy sweet hanna, we needed one.

...I just hope no one thought it would be cute to give her #24.

What are your comments about the San Antonia blunder? Again, the management ruined a great thing going last year - this year could be the demise of the franchise.

Maybe the BCs are feeling like so many of the rest of us--rapidly losing interest. And at this point what more is there to write about? "Mystics lose"? "Coaching is lousy"? "Front office burying head in sand, trotting out cliche excuses"?
Even the Facebook fans are unhappy, and they are generally pretty supportive. In fact some have even suggested bringing back Tree to replace Trudi (sadly Tree may actually be the better coach).
