"I Never Made it This Far"

Mystics fans need no reminder that this is the first playoff season in three years in which Washington and its fans are on the outside looking in. But tonight, as the second round of the WNBA playoffs get underway, there are a few alumnae of the Mystics whose teams are still in post-season competition, and the BCs are enjoying watching them play.

In particular, we could not be happier for Nakia Sanford that -- for the first time ever -- she has the opportunity to play in a Conference final playoff series, after her Phoenix Mercury beat the defending champion Seattle Storm in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs on Monday.

Sitting in the locker room that night after the decisive third game, Nakia buried her face in her jersey, overcome with emotion. Teased by her teammates, Nakia said, "I never made it this far." (Video here). For the BCs, who have followed Nakia for her entire, improbable, WNBA career, it was also a very emotional moment.

Yes, Nakia's improbable WNBA career. Nakia graduated from the University of Kansas in 1999, having played for the Jayhawks on the team that won the first Big 12 title. But Nakia was not signed by any WNBA team, and she went overseas to play. Several years passed. No WNBA teams came knocking, and it is likely that Nakia thought she would never play professionally in the United States. Fortune, however, smiled. Nakia was playing one off-season on a team in South Korea with Chamique Holdsclaw, where she was spotted by the Mystics' then-Head Coach, Marianne Stanley. (Our recollection, in fact, is that it was actually Mique who told Coach Stanley she needed to come take a look at Nakia.) In April 2003, the Mystics signed Nakia as a free agent.

The rest, as they say, is history. Nakia spent the next 8 seasons with the Mystics, often as a reserve, although she was thrust into a starting role early in the 2007 season when the Mystics suddenly traded away starting Center Chasity Melvin to the Sky (in exchange for Mo Currie).

Nakia was always one of the most fan-friendly players. She has a great sense of humor, does wonderful charity work, and, maybe because of her improbable late arrival to the WNBA, she never seemed to take the fans or the experience of playing in the U-S of A for granted. Nakia may not lead the league in on-court statistics, but if we were ranking players on how they represented the league, their team, and their city . . . Nakia would be right up there at the top of the list.

During the past off-season, when GM/HC Trudi set in motion her "rebuilding with youth" strategy, Nakia was not re-signed by the Mystics. She found a new home in Phoenix (as a reserve). Bench player or not, tonight Nakia gets to do something she's never done . . . play in a Conference championship series.

The BCs could not be happier for her. Go Kia!

Corey Gaines has said repeatedly the Mercs would not be in the conference finals were it not for Nakia. She was an absolute monster in that Seattle series. Diana Taurasi described her as one of the best teammates she has ever had. And there is no question from reading her blog that she feels at home with this team.

Good luck Kia!

Way to go Nakia! I think about the garbage the Mystics picked up to play for them this year, and it makes me extra happy for her. Go Phoenix!

I agree and am so happy for Nakia. She was one of the most friendly Mystics players we've had. Her not being re-signed has turned into a blessing. I will be watching and so enjoying watching her play.

Diana Taurasi said in her interview after the Seattle game that Nakia on the floor makes Phoenix a championship team. I can't think of higher praise for Nakia, and wish her the best of luck in the finals. Go Mercury!!!

Glad to see Nakia doing so well. But I think its funny that during Planks two years and before most fans were very vocal about the need to trade both Nakia and Chas. Even Plank and Taylor spoke of the need to upgrade our post play. That's all you heard last year from both fans and coach/GM but this year folks are criticizing letting her go because she's been able to make a contribution to Phoenix.

Just because you think they Mystics needed an upgrade in that position, doesn't mean you don't like Nakia and are happy for her. She is on a good team.

I am happy with Nakia. Coach Plank used her well and she was a crowd pleaser who worked hard. What is our status for next year? SAME OLD SAME OLD AS THIS YEAR???
FOLLOW THE SAME LOSING COURSE??????Too bad - I am not renewing and don't plan to watch more BAD basketball.

I am glad someone brought up next year. I guess our organization will continue the course - A LOSING COURSE for next year. Too bad.

Also happy for the former Mystics who made the finals with the Dream. Would love to see them both get rings.

Can't root for the Dream because of Angel even though Harding is one of favorite players. Angel display last night was ridiculous. What a brat!

The year in review on Marissa Coleman is pretty funny. She was benched. I didn't agree with it but why would you have her on your home page when your coached benched her and essentially barely played her at the end of the year?

Well said BC's. Nakia stepped up big time for the Mercury when the biggest brat of all - Kara Braxton - chose to focus her enormous talent on picking fights with her teammates and had to be dumped off the team.

But her limitations as a player were clear in the series against the Dream, just as they were while she played for the Mystics.

As far as purely on-court performance, choosing between Kia and Nikki really IS a 'crapshoot.' (And the Mystics gave up their lottery pick to get Nikki).

But as the BC's eloquently shared, being a good teammate is not just about how they play on the court. Nakia is one of the best and most supportive teammates. The Mercury seem to be collecting them as former Duke player Krystal Thomas can become a very similar player on the court and is already there off the court. No matter what you think of Krystal as a player, I think even Terp fans know that Krystal is a player who's been battle tested by life.

Regarding the season reviews of Mystics players, at least the second one involved a player who actually played. Opening up with a review of Alana's season was just too pathetic, even for the Mystics.

2012 is a good class. Rutan (transfer) will play, Howard, Chloe, and T Pheirman (SP?). Great recruiting class.
