Utterly Embarrassing

Tonight, at home, the Terps were beaten by Virginia Tech, 75-69.

Congratulations to the Hokies.

I can't believe what I witnessed tonight at Comcast. AT is apparently hurt and it seems we can't beat one of the worst teams in the league at home without her. Totally embarrassing loss. One of the worst I've seen in a long time. WOW.

We seemed extremely flat and our guard play, with the exception of Mincy was atrocious--20 turnovers, compared to 7 for Tech. Moseley was very ineffective; lots of missed shots and turnovers. Barrett didn't score at all. Rodgers evidently started but continued her season long trend of riding the pine for most of the game. I think Sequoia was our second best guard tonight.

It seemed like only Kizer and Hawkins came to play--and Hawkins' aggression lead to two silly fouls in the second half. Once she went to the bench, the stadium crew apparently put a lid on the basket, because Maryland hardly scored the rest of the way.

Congrats to Tech. They outworked and outclassed us tonight. The team should be embarrassed to lose this way at home.

20 turnovers and only outrebounded them by 1 is not good....remember when Lang was out that stretch and the other girls stepped up (ie Jade on Big Syl)and they won without her until she was healthy? Well somebody needs to step up on this team!

60-65 turnovers in the last 3 games. Point guard play is beyond poor. Barrett--I'm not sure what is wrong with her but she is letting down her team. I sat in traffic for 2 hrs to watch that embarrassing performance. Honestly, I haven't seen them play well in a while (did not watch the Duke game). I will keep missing KT, MC, Lang and Harp until this team shows me something. Meaning, don't lose to teams at home that you absolutely should not. 60-65 turnovers--Come On! 3 games in a row a player has scored 30 plus on you.

They have a whole lot to prove now.

Why didn't Coach try Rodgers when the team needed 3's near the end? Also, why didn't the team bother to take any 3's at the end? Very bewildering final 5 minutes. Team seemed to be in disarray (witness Tech's offensive rebounds off of missed free throws). Hopefully this was just a bad night and the team can move on. Even good teams can have off nights.

Why isn't Rodgers playing period? A player whose production in big games, on both ends of the court that led to wins, time and time again for this program can't get off the bench. 3 minutes here no minutes there. A new observer would think she can't produce under pressure or handle quality minutes but any follower of Maryland or opposing fan for the past 4 years knows differently.

3 turnovers in 12 mins for Kim. Therefore she ended up on the bench. We had some really poor shot selection last night and Kim was part of that. Barrett is just playing awful right now. We need leadership and smart play from our point guard. We are not getting that right now. They really do have a lot to prove with a very tough schedule ahead of them. People that were talking about their cream puff schedule in non conference are really talking now.

Coming into the season, I thought point guard was going to be the key. Moseley at least has an excuse for inconsistent play. She's a freshman. Barrett has no excuse. She is a fifth-year senior. But I think the problem goes deeper. What is Brenda's offensive philosophy? I sure cannot tell at times. It's basically get some talent and give them the ball. They have the talent, although Natasha Cloud's transfer didn't help the point guard situation. But they need to be more active on offense. They tend to stand around and wait for Alyssa to make plays. I will say that Kizer, Hawkins and Mincy had good games, although Hawkins foul troubles continue to plague her. Plus the missed foul shots in the last few minutes -- most by S-E-N-I-O-R-S -- killed us.

I saw sprained left thumb on twitter for AT but that sure looked like a cast...anyone know how long she'll be out?

Hope it's not long--clearly this team doesn't know how to play without her. I noticed the same thing as far as players standing around watching. AB needs to drive and kick...drive and kick. Stop dribbling the ball around while everyone stands around and watches. I thought Mincy played well last night and thought maybe she should have been on #31 the whole game instead of Whitney Bayes. I'm sure Whitney is a fine player but right now, clearly she isn't ready for prime time play. Like Mincy was last year, she looks lost. I expect big things from her next year and hopes she won't transfer.

It was just such a disapointing and embarrassing loss. No disrepect to VT, but if you are a top program, you can't lose to that team at home. Is it the Maryland Terrapins or the Alyssis Thomas Terrapins?

I can't let you lay the blame at Rodgers feet because she has been an excellent player for this program. I don't know what Maryland team you are watching but Rodgers has been on the bench the whole season. Except for 13-15 minutes against Virginia, and given the chance the player did what she has always done, help Maryland win. Check the box score. That was my point in the above post. How can Kim be accused of taking bad shots when she took 1 shot in those 12 minutes and that shot came in the 1st half and zero free throws for the game. Box score will verify that. Mincy committed two crucial turnovers when they still had a chance at the end did you not see that? MD down 66-63 with around 1:23 and at about :25. But she did score 19 points in 40 mins. They are a far better defensive team when Kim is on the floor. Coaches who win titles and not just games demand defense from all players. If doesn't matter if you score 19 when the opposing guards keep having 30 plus point career nights. If you are going to assess players be objective. Also DeVaughn and Hawkins need more touches.

The shot Kim took was a bad shot. That's all I was saying--yes only 1 shot---but it was a bad shot. They were scoring inside. She comes down and tries a quick 3 when they were on a bit of a run. Not a good shot. She had 3 turnovers in 12 minutes. I don't understand, are you saying Kim should be starting instead of Mincy? I like both players and I know Kim has contributed to the success of the team. We won the 2009 ACC's because of Kim--she was the X factor. But injuries have really hurt her and there is no way she is better defensively than Mincy. All I was trying to say is we took a bunch of bad shots to include Kim's 1 shot. Kizer taking 3's--when she was having success inside--bad shots. I think because the point guard play and we weren't moving but instead doing a lot of standing and watching.

Kim Rodgers should have played more in the second half, particularly near the end when they needed 3 point shots. I'm not sure what Coach Frese is doing with Rodgers. I have the utmost respect for Coach Frese, but also don't believe that she is infallible. In the last 10 minutes, with Hawkins on the bench after picking her fourth foul on a silly over the back call, Tech packed the lane with their zone defense and dared us to beat them with outside shots. We couldn't do it. This year, Mincy has been our best outside shooter (and is probably the best defender on the team), but Rodgers has produced too when given the opportunity (see the Virginia game). You shouldn't pull someone based on one (bad) shot, particularly when you're desperate for outside shooting.

Kim's percentages have been very low. It's not like she has been shooting lights out. She hasn't done that consistently since 2009. The game against VA was her best game in a while and i was very happy for her. If we would have hit free throws (Ajale and Kizer) and rebounded, we would have won (realize we should have blown them out). Maybe you are right--play Brene, Mincy, Rodgers, and 2 bigs when VT was packing it in. This shouldn't even be a discussion-- we should have won. Missing one player shouldn't screw up your whole team.

I never said that she is better than Mincy or that she should be a starter. My question was how do you not use a player of that caliber?

She was used in the first half and turned the ball over 3 times in 12 minutes. Therefore she earned her spot back on the bench. Not sure why she wasn't given a 2nd chance in the 2nd half but there must have been a good reason.

I can understand positive feelings for Kim - Kim is doing the best she can and has put up with so many health issues - not her fault she is not at 100 per cent. I feel for her. At this point she is unable to compete - Angela as others have mentioned just isn't a leader - Brenda needs to go to Brene - Brene needs time to be a leader and she will add a lot of quickness. Brene is a dynamic player - she was player of the week early in the year - just needs some consistent time on the court. Angela can sub at the shooting guard and hopefully shoot better without the responsibility of leading the team. Happy to see Whitney get some time - hope she gets 100 per cent healthy.

You wonder what our team would look like with Natashia Cloud. We are very weak at point guard, clearly. I agree on Brene. Maybe give her a shot and have AB sub at shooting guard and point. Unless AB has an awakening--which I am hoping she does.

I was glad to see Sequoia get some time, not at the end of the game. She came in, played good D and gave us some positive energy...more energy than anyone else was showing. I think she has earned more time than she gets.
