Heading West

The Washington Mystics announced this afternoon that they have traded Marissa Coleman to the Los Angeles Sparks in exchange for guard Noelle Quinn.

As fans know, Marissa grew up in the DC-area, went to college at Maryland, and was then drafted by the Mystics in 2009. Apart from some overseas play, this will be Marissa's first real time "leaving home" to play basketball.

The move will also reunite Marissa with one of her Natty-winning teammates, Kristi Toliver.

The BCs wish Marissa all the best in Los Angeles!

WOW! I'm very happy for Marissa. Though, my favorite player and the reason why I started liking the Terps is leaving, I think it's a great move for her. I hope we now see the Marissa we saw at MD--the player with so much passion and toughness. I will now be a Sparks fan.

Glad for Marissa that she gets to escape this mess! Another reason I have yet to renew my season tickets until I know what I'm getting. Feel bad for Lang. The Sparks.... watch Marissa come alive again.

I hope Marissa can thrive in LA. I hope Noelle can contribute to our team positively too and I want to see what else the Mystics do during free agency.

Can anyone explain whether this trade benefits us? I'm sick about it.

I don't think the trade does benefit the Mystics. I think it was more about getting rid of an unhappy player. I'm glad for Marissa that she was able to land on a good team and with an old teammate.

Hopefully Marissa will finally step up and play. She has not lived up to her potential. here.

I am sad to see Marissa leave, but glad she is going to Mystics West (seems like we always trade our players to the Sparks and they thrive out there) to have a chance at a championship. The Sparks GM (Penny Toler) really knows what she is doing. Wish we had that insight!!!!

It is going to be a long season. Hopefully, the Mystics will prove me wrong.

I think the Sparks got the better end of this trade. Hope Noell is up for the challenge. Now let's see, we gave up one of the best point guards in the league to Atlanta, a draft pick for Anosike (which didn't pan out), and now Marissa to LA. Who's next?

I really hope to see Marissa turn into a solid pro. She doesn't need to be an all star--just a solid pro. I wish her the very best. As a Terp, she was a joy to watch and was a significant part to rebuilding the program.

Best wishes Marissa!

To the Mystics: You suck!

To Marissa: You are a jewel. We will always follow you and support you wherever you play. Good luck!

Sad to see Marissa leave but think she will thrive with the better run Sparks. Noelle is pretty good from the Sparks games I have seen so hopefully she helps us. We didn't give away or let get away Harding--she wanted out, so don't blame that on the Mystics not wanting her to stay.

And BC's--thanks for reposting the short skirt pic fm Terp days!! Hopefully you keep the Marissa award for the banquet.lol

All the best to Marissa! She will be missed. I hope she does well in LA.

Yes, thank you BCs for posting that picture of Marissa. Just one more reason why I'll miss her. lol

We lost Harding as she wanted out. Marissa didn't particularly like the coaching. She wants out too. We are in for another rotten year. So sorry for Lang. I bet Matee will have a chance to leave too. What a disaster. Quinn is no star who will save our team. We won't get any stars here. We will only get those who need jobs. Nothing is in place to attract top players. Top players go to coaches who are good and to programs that are winners. We have neither. SORRY that I am so negative.

Anonymous 5:18, you're not negative...you speak the uncomfortable truth. We are not going to sign any superstars in our current state of disarray. We will have mediocre players, management will blame it on a "rebuilding year", the coach will be clueless, and Sheila will (again, still) not show her face at the games.

I wish the Mystics had combined her with our draft choice and tried to move up in the draft. This seems like an even-up trade except that I believe Marissa's upside is greater then Noelle's. And now the Mystics have traded away all that potential.

Hopefully Marissa will put the work in and become the professional she is capable of being. If not I don't think the Sparks are going to be very patient and she may herself looking for another team. Remember, we are not talking about the Marissa who played for Maryland. We are talking about the Marissa who underachieved for 3 years in this league. I wish her the best and hope she recognizes that this is her job. If she does not do her job they will hire someone else. Welcome Noelle Quinn. Hope you can help this Mystics team because they sure need help - alot of help.

I agree. Marissa with the Mystics was not the player she was at Maryland. She can only blame so much on coaching and management.

I think she will have a hard time getting minutes there like Tolover did at first.

I agree about playing time. Marissa is really going to have to prove herself. I'm pulling for her. Would love to see her succeed in LA.
