Wynonna and a Win. The Mystics got a much-needed win over the Sky tonight at the Phone Booth, 92-74. Although the final score makes it sound like the game was a walkover, in fact it wasn't until the fourth quarter that the Mystics put Chicago away. While DC played a good first quarter, the Mystics pretty much went on cruise control until the final period, playing some lackluster ball during the middle of the game.

Tonight's game was an integral part of Youth AIDS Day at the Verizon Center, sponsored by, among others, Sheila Johnson's Washington Mystics Foundation. The event began with a youth forum about AIDS in the afternoon, followed by the game. At halftime, R&B recording artist Lyfe Jennings performed the first single, S.E.X., from his new album. While the BasketCases are not quite the generation at which this song is aimed, from what we could gather, the message seemed to be: take a deep breath and don't rush into having S-E-X.

Following the game, an artist closer to the BasketCases' generation, country music superstar (and Youth AIDS U.S. Ambassador) Wynonna Judd treated the fans to a mini-concert. Wynonna put on a fantastic show. Listening to her sing "I Want to Know What Love Is" was worth the price of the game ticket all by itself. The BasketCases were privileged to have "front of stage access" passes that enabled us to be part of "Wynonna's Pit Crew." While it wasn't quite a mosh pit (there were no bodies being passed around as far as we could see), at our ages it could be the closest we'll ever get to one!

Hi Ladies - I always enjoy your posts. I was curious if you had any detail on the post game interview with Ashley Judd and Ms Beard. Folks around me were a bit hyped so I could not hear much, but it seemed that Ashley was gushing and fun. Also that Alana was charmed and a bit embarrassed - she had the best smile I have seen in a long time and I would love to have heard the full Q&A. Any details would be appreciated

The interview was the best part of the night in my opinion! Ashley started off by saying "I'm star-struck. Are you open for some love?" I think that embarrassed Alana. Ashley said she loved Alana's "slash game" and that she likes basketball "in the paint." Alana got the best of her though and responded by saying, "Yeah, I have a good slash" and then asking the best question of the night: "You seem to know a lot about basketball. Do you follow basketball or did someone teach you overnight?" It was hysterical. I'd love to find see a transcript or a replay on Youtube or somewhere.

The interview was indeed one of the most memorable moments. Seeing Ashley Judd shamelessly flrit with Alan Beard is a memory I will keep with me always. They were both having much fun chatting back and forth. In fact, they both just ignored the poor girl from the Verizon Center who kept trying to get them to wrap it up for about 3 minutes.

It's too bad the Verizon Center didn't show the video of the interview on the big screen as they were facing the other side of the court (away from the Mystics bench) so we only saw glimpses of Alana's smiling profile. She seemed genuinely flattered. Who wouldn't be?

Lots of little things throughout the evening made it a really special event. The Mystics got ahead early and managed to have fun on the court again. All our subs saw a little playing time. There were a few minutes towards the end of the fourth quarter where Nakia was the most senior Mystic on the floor and Laurie had to stop herself from shooting some easy threes to pass the ball around so everyone could get some playing experience, which was really generous because she had a few really open looks. I saw Nakia tugging on Stacy's jersey during a lull in the action in a playful manner like you would mess with an old friend you haven't seen in a while. We had appearances by Elanor Holmes Norton and Ashley Judd. The free Wynonna concert was a great time. A lot of folks stuck around for it too so I think it was a real success. And, of course, the Mystics put up another W which always makes for a great time.

From a Fan(atic)'s perspecitve it was one of the best games I've attended all season.
