Gone.
WNBA President Donna Orender announced this evening that the Houston Comets franchise is being disbanded.
Houston's former owner turned the team back to the league midway through last season. The WNBA league office has been operating the Comets since that time. Efforts to find a new owner for the team have been unsuccessful.
The BasketCases wrote about Houston's predicament earlier this year. Unfortunately, our fear that this storied franchise might disappear has, indeed, come true. We feel sick. The Comets were everything the Mystics and many other teams aspired to be. The players who've worn Comets red include some of the greatest stars of women's basketball: Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes, Tina Thompon . . . and the late, courageous Kim Perrot.
What else can we say, except that this news sucks.
Next Monday, the WNBA will hold a dispersal draft, sending Houston's current players to other teams. When that draft is completed, the Houston Comets will, officially, be gone.
Tuesday Morning Update: ESPN.com's (and BasketCases' pal) Mechelle Voepel weighs in on the Comets demise and what this means (or doesn't mean) for the future of the WNBA. Link here.

Matee Ajavon would look good in a Mystics uniform
Efforts, according to more recent news, were successful- there were two groups interested if the league had been able to wait a year.
My heart's breaking now. Liberty without Comets? It's just not right. And the way it's been handled is completely appalling.
And trust me, Ajavon would look good in a Mystic uniform right up until her nineteenth missed shot and her sixth turnover. You better hope Atlanta does something stupid and takes her so you can swoop in for Lyttle.
The collapse of a four-time champion franchise will severely test fan (and investor) confidence in the stability of the league. To call it "not a good sign" would be a understatement.
This is horrible news. I hope it's not an omen. I LOVE the idea of the WNBA and giving young women an opportunity to showcase their talents on the professional level. It's frightening to think of the league's most decorated team as gone. Meantime, I think Sancho Little would look GREAT in a Mystics uniform.
Maybe we could sign Michelle Snow?
We need a point guard in the worst way. Give me Ajavon.
We need a point guard who can start NOW and run a professional team. Can Ajavon do that?
Maybe pick Pee Wee Johnson and then draft Toliver. She could get KT ready for the next step. If not hope to get Little or try to sign Snow. I'd really love to sign Tina Thompson in a big way. Ok Angela and Julie it's time to do some wheeling and dealing.
"Ok Angela and Julie it's time to do some wheeling and dealing."
Definitely the first test of the new "administration."
