Big Foam Colonial-heads? Brilliant! Would this be the key to George Washington upsetting the reigning National Champion Terrapins? For a few minutes there, about midway through the first half, it looked like it was possible . . . but NO, as cute as the hats were (not to mention the fans wearing them!) they weren't enough to upset the No. 1 ranked team in the land.

Maryland opened the game with its now standard offensive burst, outscoring GW 12-2 in the first four minutes of play. But the Colonials clawed their way back to close the gap to 1 point (21-20) with about 7-1/2 minutes left in the first half. After that, it was All Maryland All the Time. GW managed just one more basket before the break while the Terps added 15 pts to their total. Maryland continued to dominate in the second half outscoring GW 37-26, for a final score of 73-48. Tourney MVP Crystal Langhorne (no disrespect to Lang, but the BasketCases think Harp deserved the honor . . . and apparently, so did Lang) led all scorers with 20 pts and led all rebounders with 11 boards.

Despite its usual lack of coverage for women's sports, I do subscribe to Sports Illustrated. This morning I looked at the basketball college preview edition (dated Nov. 20) and lo and behold, there was a great story about the Maryland Women's b-ball team. Maybe there is hope for SI, but probably not, since the women's section was miniscule compared to the men's.

Go Terps!!
