Kay Yow announced yesterday that she will be taking a leave of absence from her head coaching duties at NC State to focus on treatment of her breast cancer.

"Yow's doctors have recently detected progression of the disease. Treatment of the breast cancer at this time will require a combination of chemotherapy and newer targeted biologic therapies, which have begun this week."

Everyone familiar with women's college basketball knows Kay Yow --- a classy lady, a Hall of Famer, sister of Maryland AD Debbie Yow, and sister of former WNBA assistant coach Susan Yow --- and knows that Kay has been fighting this disease for many years. The BasketCases wish Kay a short leave and a full recovery. On this Thanksgiving Day, when we count our blessings, let's remember to send prayers and positive thoughts to Kay and all those battling disease and other hardships.

In July, 2000, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, Kay Yow, who only knew me through a mutual friend, wrote a personal and powerfully motivating letter to me. Her words were an inspiration throughout my surgery, chemotherapy, and recovery.

I hold her in the highest regard.
She is a great coach, and an even greater human being.

I pray that she will have the strength and courage to fight and win this battle again.

Thank you for sharing your comments. Your high regard for Kay is consistent with everything we've observed and heard about her. She seems like quite a remarkable lady. We, too, are pulling for her (and you) to come out the winner in the battle against this terrible disease.
